Happy Thanksgiving - Gobble, Gobble! PDF Print E-mail

Happy Thanksgiving everyone and welcome to my first blog entry!  It has been a wonderful day - spent it with family, ate way too much, drank some wine and watched the Packers win again.  It couldn't have been a better day :)

When I was small holiday dinners were always a huge production.  If you could see our old 8mm movies, you would see tables covered with foods of all sorts.  It seemed that Grandma and Mom were always in the kitchen, cooking up yet another dish.  It wasn't usual to not only have the Thanksgiving Turkey, but to also have a large roast beef or ham; then there was the mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, several different vegetables, stuffing, gravy, cranberries, breads, a salad or two...and of course, several different desserts.  There was no way you were going to leave that table without having gained 10 pounds!

While Grandma and Mom kept us well fed, Grandpa kept our spirits high with music, dancing, lively conversation and homemade wine.  Every party was celebrated like it was going to be our last.  If you knew my grandparents and were forturnate enough to sample their hospitality, you know what I'm talking about.

A few years ago, while looking at an old family photos, someone asked me why every picture seemed to have food in it.  I explained that there had been a time in my grandparent's lives when they did not have food; they had been political refugees without a home or a country for 6 years, living in refugees camps, and many nights there simply was no food to eat.  Their parties were not just holiday celebrations, but also celebrations of life renewed; in rememberance of what they had been through and in thanksgiving for their good fortune, friends and family.

As we go through this Holiday Season, let us all take time to remember what we are truly thankful for and celebrate life - eat, drink and be merry! (We can always go back on our diets in 2008!)
